Providence is calling a Lactation Consultant (Per diem/Variable Shift) to Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center in Tarzana, CA.

We are seeking a Lactation Consultant who will be responsible for the delivery of patient care through the breastfeeding assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This is a multi-facility position that links breast-feeding support services for Women and Children Programs. The position serves as a lead consultant that will provide breast-feeding education and assistance to in-patients and outpatients. The consultant will also provide education to nursing staff. This will ensure that consistent support is available to all patients.

In this position you will:

  • SERVICE:

  • Promote patient, physician, customer and employee satisfaction by personal example, treating all contacts with respect.

  • Support and participate in activities that foster customer service.

  • Communicate and follow the organizational chain of command for notification of patient care/service issues, when appropriate.

  • PEOPLE:

  • Maintain required applicable licensure, certification and education.

  • Attend and successfully completes general and department orientation, in-service programs and the annual key competencies and mandatory update requirements.

  • Participate actively in department staff meetings

  • Demonstrate mastery of verbal and written communications.

  • Provide care that considers physical, psychosocial, spiritual and cultural needs of patients.

  • Evaluate and respond appropriately to ensure patient safety based on the physical environment, equipment and the patient’s behavior.

  • Demonstrate critical thinking and the ability to provide care in emergency situations and follows established emergency procedures and practices.

  • Demonstrate competence in the clinical knowledge, skills required, and technology utilized in the department.

  • Answer call lights in a timely manner and responds appropriately.

  • Demonstrate willingness & ability to float to areas within their scope of practice as necessary.

  • Responsible for directing and coordinating staff education and competencies for breastfeeding care of practice.

  • Assist with revising and implementing breastfeeding hospital policies.

  • Collaborate with other disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desire patient outcome.

  • Utilize knowledge of patient’s age and cultural diversity into the provision of patient care.

  • Act as a Project Assistant for all programs that promote and support Breastfeeding for the facility.

  • Collects manage and correlate data for projects that relate to perinatal patients and breastfeeding.

  • Professional knowledge of the breastfeeding process, Antepartum, intrapartum and post partum health care and psychosocial issues. Knowledge of premature infants and from newborns to toddlers.

  • Knowledge of pharmaceuticals and the effects on lactation for Antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum patients and newborns to toddlers.

  • Plan, teache and evaluate classes for expectant and new breastfeeding mothers.

  • Consult with mothers having breastfeeding problems daily.

  • Make decisions and develops health care plans based on interpretation of the data, physical examinations and laboratory results.

  • Recognize and respond appropriately to deviation from normal.

  • Participate appropriately in communication and decision-making activities in regards to lactation in Women’s and Children’s department.

  • Attend and actively participate in breastfeeding and staff meetings.

  • Select appropriate breastfeeding related supplies for use, sale and rental.

  • Over-see breast pump rentals to mothers (if applicable).

  • Plan, teach and conduct in-service education for nursing staff and physicians.

  • Plan, organize and deliver lactation management services to all breastfeeding patients, both in-patient and out-patient.

  • Possess proficient oral and written communication skills.

  • Evaluate equipment related to breastfeeding and maintains the breastfeeding room, supports hospital employees who are breastfeeding.

  • Develop and implement standards of care and guidelines for assisting breastfeeding mothers in all areas of the organization where they might be served (ER, L&D, Pediatric, NICU etc.).

  • Contribute to the provision of quality lactation care through Performance Improvement techniques that demonstrate positive outcomes in patient care.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of age specific care, including but not limited to, identifying the need for additional safety measures, physiological normal values/readings; and observing skin integrity, behavior, motor skills and/or activities that place patients at risk as well as communicates effectively in a clear, concise, understandable manner. Applicable for the populations: Infant, Pediatric, and Adult.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Current LA City Fire Card within 30 days of hire

  • Current BLS-HCP – Basic Life Support - for Healthcare Providers - American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) - CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer accepted on hire until card expiration date

  • The Lactation Consultant is required to keep up-to-date on continuing education credits required by the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) to maintain IBCLC status

  • 2 years experience as an In-patient Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)

  • 2 years experience in an inpatient Postpartum, newborn or couplet care setting [willing to be trained to function in a Neonatal Intensive care unit (NICU) setting]
